Summary: The Urban League of London is an umbrella group whose members include a number of neighbourhood associations and community groups working to improve and connect our city.  Individuals with an interest in urban or civic matters may also become individual members of the League.

We are looking for a candidate with experience with project management, coordinating digital campaigns and advocacy or government relations. The candidate will be responsible for identifying opportunities to engage decision makers on policy that supports a Just Recovery and must be well-organized and have strong attention to detail.

 

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Coordinator will also be responsible for curating weekly communications on various platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and our website, as well as assisting with monthly member and follower e-newsletters. The position reports to the Board President of the League and will be supported by various Board members on their projects.

Duties include (but are not limited to): 

Ongoing Project Logistics (50%)

  • Supporting and localizing the Just Recovery Principles by;

    • monitoring municipal committee and council agendas to determine when decisions are being made about recovery efforts

    • mobilize the communities to support policies and funding that aligns with the Just Recovery principles

    • create digital campaigns that engage citizens in advocating for policies and funding that uses a climate, gender and equity lens

    • connect with decision makers on project proposals

    • draft statements for the Board to review and circulate to media outlets when necessary 

    • review municipal spending and policies that are being developed

    • advise the Board of Directors when there are issues of concern for policies or funding allocations that do not align or follow the Just Recovery principles.

    • research and make recommendations to the Board regarding good policies from other cities that London could implement

  • Supporting the membership

    • help members understand recovery policies and issues and support their local advocacy efforts

      • Develop briefing memos to provide factual information regarding local issues

      • Support local community groups to develop step-by-step advocacy plans

    • communicating with the membership on various campaigns

  • Projects status reports to the Board and supervisor

  • Local promotion (at events and online in advance)

  • Project management of all aspects of digital campaigning (organizing graphics or petitions, setting up events, running events and debrief of events)

Communications (35%)

  • Creation of digital campaigns (online petitions, action bulletins and social media campaigns) that drive citizens to take advocacy actions

  • Posting weekly on Facebook and Twitter platforms

  • Manage online advertising for Facebook & Instagram

  • Writing blog posts and uploading onto website

  • Managing website updates (SquareSpace)

  • Curating monthly e-newsletters for members and general public on MailChimp

Other (15%)

  • Creating and monitoring reports, surveys and evaluations for campaigns and communications

  • Researching and applying for relevant grant opportunities for the League and our membership

Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate will have some experience in project management, event planning, communications, sponsorships, and a strong passion for contributing to a healthy community. The successful candidate will have the following qualifications, traits and abilities:

  • Leadership Skills: the ability to plan, strategize, set goals, develop work plans, work efficiently and track progress; strong ability to work independently; ability to multi-task and assist with multiple projects and initiatives; initiative to explore new ideas and create new opportunities; ability to make decisions and resolve problems. 

  • Advocacy and Government Relations Skills: the ability to identify issues of concern and research policy solutions; ability to engage with decisions makers and solicit feedback on proposals; ability to write policy briefs

  • Communication Skills:  excellent communication skills (oral and written); ability to deliver presentations; knowledge of effective communication tools and strategies to engage the public. Previous experience with using social media to promote an organization or business through social media posts and online advertising highly desired.   

  • Event Planning Skills: The ideal candidate will have experience planning events.

  • Adaptability: Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and adapt to a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency. Ability to learn new technologies and master new skills. Able to handle stress and multi-task.

  • Technical Skills:  excellent computer skills (Word, GSuite and Google Drive, Excel, Powerpoint, Social Media). Website development, and graphic design are an asset.

Remuneration:

This is a  part-time contract position at the League (average of 25 hours a week for five months). All planning and logistics will be completed using a combination of email, phone calls and virtual meetings so flexibility in schedule will be necessary. $25 an hour for 25 hours a week for 5 months.
